Description
Xcalak diving from Mahahual.
Xcalak is a hidden paradise for divers who want to explore a unique and well preserved reef. The most isolated corner of Quintana Roo, Xcalak is surrounded by pristine nature and an abundance of native wildlife.
On the reefs of Xcalak you will find animals not seen in any other parts of Quintana Roo. Manatees, huge schools of tarpoons, sharks, rays, to name a few surprises that you can discover in this little fishermen town that will amaze even the most experienced divers.
This portion of the Meso-American Barrier Reef - the second largest in the world - is well suited to both Open Water as well as Advanced divers. We have great topography with beautiful shallow sites as well as deeper dives beyond the -18m/-60ft limit.
Some of the best dive sites are:
-La Poza (huge tarpon schools) 30-80 ft.
Without doubt, this is the "star" diving spot, not only from Xcalak, but in all this region. It is a wide passage with high walls where a colony of huge shads - with 6.5 feet and over 330 pounds- do live. It is quite common to have streams in this diving.
-La Chimenea (Amazing coral formations) 70-110 ft.
Although it is possible to see big barracudas in this place, this diving spot is not the one to see life, but to get into fun and beautiful caves and cracks that go across the reef. The entrance to the cave called "La Chimenea" is around 88 feet depth
- La Pozeta 45-50 ft.
This is another popular diving in the Reserve, where depth does not exceed 49 feet and sand bottoms combine with reef walls. Here, you can see snappers, eagle rays, groupers and, inside the coral cracks, lobsters and morays.
The boat ride out to the dive sites can be as little as 8 minutes or as long as 30 minutes, depending on the dive site. We usually decide where we will go on the day of the dives - all depending on weather, sea conditions and experience level of the divers on the boat.
Our boat typically leaves at 9:00 am for the first dive of the day.
If it is your first time diving Xcalak, please arrive 1 hour before your scheduled dive time.
