Banco Chinchorro with 800 km2 is the largest coral reef atoll in the northern hemisphere. Being a Biosphere Reserve with no permanent settlements and very limited access, it is among the last few truly unspoilt, majestic natural wonders remaining.

In and around Cayo centro, the largest island of three that are on the atoll, lives one of the largest & healthiest known populations of American Crocodiles.

Due to their interaction with the small group of seasonal fishermen in the reserve, they have become accustomed to coming out to clear, shallow water where we can facilitate some truly close encounters with large and often multiple crocodiles.

The American Crocodile is a relatively large specie, with males reaching a length of 5 to 6 meters and females 2 to 4 meters. Although the American Cocodrile rivals the salt water crocodile and the Nile Crocodile in size, it is not as agressive and does not include humans as part of their diet as the other two species do. This makes possible the close interaction with them, always supervised by the croc handlers with years of experience.

Banco Chinchorro is one of the best places to make this activity, due to the water clarity, weather conditions and shallow spots where the Crocs hang. You can observe this APEX predators like in no other place cause this individuals allow humans to get close and observe. Water conditions are magnificent for filming and taking pictures underwater of this majestic wild animals.

We are currently only taking small groups of no more than six experienced divers on a very limited basis. Ensuring we don't alter their behavioral and feeding habits, we are also restricting the amount of trips we run every year.

For the Diving days, Xcalak offers healthy reefs and incredible underwater wildlife such as Manatees, huge schools of tarpoons, rays, turtles, nurse and reef sharks. Definitely the best spot to dive in the Mexican caribbean ocean.
